Skin

Ok let me start off by saying I write werewolf stuff – I’ve been writing were characters for years now, I’ve spent many hours researching werewolves and other shape shifters.   My fascination with werewolves is life long – when I was a kid I used to tell my parents I was a puppy in a human suit (OK look I had a very advanced idea about totems at the age of 4).  Most of my research has surrounded canine/human shape shifting or Ursine/human shifting but some things ARE common in shape shifting legends.

The Winchesters are correct, there is on manner of killing shape shifters that is fairly universal: Beheading.

Well think about it, who the heck can get around without a head?  Beheading is the catch all for supernatural beings.  The big three in the supernatural world are beheading, fire and the destruction of the heart; Werewolves (and other shapeshifters) are susceptible to all three.

The Inquisition preferred beheading for werewolves, this is odd because the Catholic Church recognized that werewolves have a soul (and for redemption they should be burned because of that – beheading or hanging leaves no possibility of redemption) but this may have something to do with the laws that surrounded a being with multiple shapes.  If a killing was done in an alternate shape (wolf or Bear usually) the person had very little guilt (by law) if the killing was done as a human all human laws would apply if the killing was done in a “halfling” from the Were was also legally responsible.  These laws were different from country to country in Ireland a werewolf had the full protection of the church – but they were not supposed to take communion in wolf form…

OK that was kinda off track ‘cause the shapshifter wasn’t a werewolf, or a grim, or a swan maiden, or a Tengu (by the way Sam the last two can fly and Tengu can take on the shape of other humans so it could have been Tengu)

If I had to guess what “skin” was I would go with some sort of Shdhe – several fairies can shapeshift – I’m going with that ‘cause of the silver eyes (often referred to in Irish fairy tales).  But I suppose it could have been a Boogie man – and therefore a demon Boogie men are supposed to be able to take on the form of loved ones for a short time – this would explain why the shifter needed to keep Sam alive Dean had to be a ‘loved one’ for the form to hold and it would explain why the shifter when and changed back to Dean.  Sam loves Dean more than anyone so that shape would be the easiest to hold with Sam in the room.     Again, both can be beheaded.  See Sam wasn’t being an idiot when he went for it with the knife.

Silver bullets… I’m of two minds here.  In 1767 “the beast of le Gevandan” was killed with a silver bullet.  Mind you it was made from communion chalice and was re-blessed by a priest, so you got a lot going on here.  I’m not saying that the sliver bullets in the Winchester’s trunk aren’t all of that (Let’s face it Father Jim could have a line of shape shifter killing ammo) I just think they would have said the whole thing if they were.  The silver bullet killing werewolves thing became popular in the 40’s with the “Wolf Man” movie series (Universal Studios).  There were werewolves long before firearms, there is reference to a werewolf being killed by a silver knife in one of the Norse Sagas (sorry I don’t remember what one) again through the heart and out the other side – pinning her to the earth.  The pining to the earth thing was popular in the Viking sagas for killing evil things – mind you the Vikings had heroes that were werewolves as well as bad guys.

OK that was long and not very informative.  LOL

it was informative.

and this: a demon Boogie men are supposed to be able to take on the form of loved ones for a short time – this would explain why the shifter needed to keep Sam alive Dean had to be a ‘loved one’ for the form to hold and it would explain why the shifter when and changed back to Dean. Sam loves Dean more than anyone so that shape would be the easiest to hold with Sam in the room.
