shooting low

I signed up for a mini-nano. The stated goal is 250 words a day. I know that the writers reading this blog are thinking something along the lines of ‘that’s it?’

But it is November and shooting low is the best I can do. I travel for work in November and when I travel for work I’m on the go from 7:30 am to about 11 pm, that doesn’t leave time for a real stab at nano.

The past few months I’ve been pushing hard both as a writer and as a person. I’ve finished the final edits on the novel during a month that I worked 29 days straight. I’ve worked my way right into writers block.

It happens from time to time. You can see the characters and maybe even the plot, but you can’t get it to move onto the page.

If I push hard for a long time when I stop, I stop dead.

For the past few days I’ve been looking at a blinking cursor, trying to wish the ideas out of my head and onto the paper. Over the years I’ve learned that to re-start myself I need to start slow and shoot low.

So for the next month I’m going to be shooting low. Hopeing that low word count will get me back in the habbit of meating goals in my extreamly limited free time.

How about you? How do you get back in the swing of things after time away?

That is kind of what I did, I sat down and wrote a lot of blog posts (well like 5). I've written the intro to the story 3 times now from different POV.

The story touches on something horrable that happend here in the 1830's and it just may be to horrable for me to write about.
Oct. 23rd, 2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
yes i can see how that would happen

Oh compleatly - and I've never been one to write historicals. I'm, as my husband would say, "a little nerved up" about it.
Oct. 24th, 2012 02:12 pm (UTC)
good luck with it

Maybe the secret in this case is exorcising the horror of the facts, via the story. I wrote one of my rare short stories to exorcise the horror of a recurring dream. Worked like Gangbusters.

BTW, if you're writing a story & not an historical article, you should be able to tweak things, right? So maybe show the unknown "facts" which make it not so bad after all in your plot? Like the bad guys really did get punished on whatever? Sort of alternate universe?

So sorry about the WB!
I hope the shooting low NaNo works for you! If you find you can only do half that each day, you'll still be ahead by that much! Better than zilch.

After more no-fiction-writing months than I care to count, I wrote nearly a whole short story a week ago. Me, a short story. I must have slipped briefly into an alternate universe. Anyway to answer your question, I got back into the swing of things thanks to a deadline set by Marina at Scribblers. But you already know how deadlines help.

Congrats on the novel & finishing the revision! Remind us of publication day!

Re: So sorry about the WB!
publication day should be soon.

After all of the editing I wrote a 10K story very quickly - but since then not so much.

The thing I'm trying to work on has Duffy's Cut I have the chericters and an idea... but not much else yet
