It’s all about balance

I have two short e-books published by Books To Go Now  and two upcoming short stories, one in a hold it in your hand anthology and another one with B2GN. I know that when you are with a small publisher your number of sales is dependent on how much you can market yourself.

The thing is I’m not good at marketing myself.

I mean I try. I got a blog under my real name, I have a twitter and a facebook and my live journal. The thing is I never seem to be able to update them; or at least not with the regularity that I would like. I feel like I should be saying something interesting or funny. I often feel like I should be exceptional before I even try to have anyone even look at it.

I guess that’s not how I should be looking at it., If I don’t put myself out there I’ll never get anywhere.

The other problem I have is time. I work three jobs (admittedly one job I only do once a month or so) so time is an issue. And I do like to spend time with people and write from time to time. I am not near a computer from 8am to 8pm most nights.

Anyway this is the long way of saying that for the next month I am going to start working on getting my stuff together. I’m going to start working on blogging and really pushing my stories. Not to the exclusion of everything else, of course, but hopefully enough for me to get on a roll with it. I am hoping to find a balance of life, writing and social media.

edit: because I’ve had a few offers to spread the word about my stories so I’m editing to add the links.

Box of Cows: It's tough being a Fairy in the human world and Alex seems to draw trouble wherever he goes. When that trouble involves other fairies, there's no telling what can happen!

and Rebulding Year: The Hampden County Hyenas are a hockey team that is a bit unusual. They really are hyenas-or boudas. Much like werewolves they are both man and beast-a perfect fit for hockey. It is a rebuilding year for the team and it's time to hunt for a new recruit.

it is hard and I'm not sure how much the social medias really help to be honest.

that said I'm more than happy to tweet your book links and put a pimp in my blogs for you

Yeah I've been wondering about that as well, I keep being told it helps. I can't imagine that it helps as much as evryone keeps saying.

I would love it if you could pimp them for me. I added the links to the post, would you like me to send you a copy of one or both of them?

honestly at the virtual launch parties i've been too it's just been other authors at the publishing house.

sure you can send them. it's no problem
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:28 am (UTC)
yeah, we have a facebook group and it's 90% authors from the publishing house.

send me an e-mail and I'll send you a pdf

will do. thanks

and yeah i know what you mean. I'm not sure anyone is listening to me on twitter but whatever. I'm trying I guess

I'll be honest - I've pretty much given up on twitter. I only use it to keep up with a few people and following my fav hockey team.

I sent you both stories, I think both of them have a few errors, they were the pre-release copies (I so need to fix them, but with the time crunch I've been in recently)

i find twitter and facebook both to be pointless. I just use it in the vain hopes that someone cares more than I do

okay i see them. no problem, trust me I understand

yeah - I feel like it would be hard for me to do as much pimping as I would have to do to make enough to pay my bills.

I can't imagine anyone could do enough I am going to try to post more often though.

I've been trying to reply for about a half an hour. The only way I'd have time to look for places to promote would be if I had time off. I just don't have any on line time at this point.

I can't find anything on blogger. I actuly can't find anything. I can't figure out how to serch a topic.

I think my on line time is about 4 hours a week or something like that now? (it's the 'if I don't sstart going to bed at 9 I'm up until 2am thing)

Don't bother trying to learn about a search function - it dosn't seem to have one (this is after looking through the help section for it) but then again *nothing* there works they way it should from the instructions in the 'help' section. It took me 6 trys to freind you and I had the instructions up when I did it.

Blogger one more reason to hate google - not that I needed one more.

Good for you! Promote yourself cause no one will do it better. It's a struggle I'll tell you. I have so many blogs and I post my work almost everywhere and sometimes I feel like what's the point. No one is commenting, no one is buying my stuff. But someone's gotta do it and if you believe in your work and you love what you're doing then continue to promote.

This might have turned out to be more of a pep talk for ME! LOL. Sorry.

Looks like your on the right path :)

The problem is time. I have enough time to either write - or blog there really isn't time for both in my life. I do beleve and love my work, but I only have a limited amount of time in my life for any activity this isn't work. LOLL

It's OK to make it into a peptalk for yourself.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Keep at it. I took a look at your amazon pages and your books look like a lot fun :)
Aug. 9th, 2011 10:47 am (UTC)
right now I think I'm taking a break for a bit - well until Friday.

I enjoyed writting the stories - that's why I'm glad the ones that got picked up got picked up -- so I think they are a lot of fun. LOL

How do you go about getting your stuff on Kindle? Do you do it yourself or do you have a publisher?
Aug. 11th, 2011 10:38 am (UTC)
All my stuff is through a publisher, but I'm pritty sure you can self publish on kindle, I don't know exaclty how, but I can see if I can figure it out for you.

Also you could probalby set yourself up as a publisher with Amazon.
Aug. 12th, 2011 07:10 am (UTC)
A publisher reads your stories and chooses which ones she/he thinks is publish material, right? Does a publisher edit as well?

I could just look this stuff up, but I really like to have conversations =)
Aug. 12th, 2011 10:49 am (UTC)
Yeah I sent my stories to a publisher they read it and decided if they liked it or not, when they decided they wanted it, they sent me a contract. Then my peice went to an editor - she sent me the changes I should make, but I did the actual changes.

This is a good site. It helps you serch for a publisher by genra. http://www.duotrope.com/

I don't mind haveing converstaions either.

Self promotion is difficult! I don't do a lot of professional artwork or commissions anymore because I don't have the time to promote myself, online or otherwise.

That being said, I hope you find a good way to spread the word about yourself, because I love these stories. :D

Aug. 9th, 2011 01:25 am (UTC)
It's kinda sad that we can either do the promotion or the art it's self. It's so sad. I still love the peice you did for me -- it feels like forever ago now LOL

Aug. 9th, 2011 01:33 am (UTC)
Yeah, we need the money to hire an agent.

Thank you! It practically WAS forever ago. :p I should really put up more of my art, it's improved a lot since then.
Aug. 9th, 2011 10:52 am (UTC)
Yeah totaly.

You should! I know the peices you put up last year (was it last year) were awesome! I'm in a contest to get a novel publised, maybe if I win and maybe if they let me have input into my cover (I don't know if they will or not) I could put in a good word for you.
Aug. 9th, 2011 12:52 pm (UTC)
That's so cool! I hope you win, I'll be rooting for you! I'd love to do your cover, if I can :p
Aug. 10th, 2011 12:37 am (UTC)
It would be cool if you could do the cover - we will see.

thanks for pul;ing for me.
Aug. 8th, 2011 05:54 pm (UTC)
Congratulations :)
Aug. 9th, 2011 01:17 am (UTC)
thank you - I'm pumped about the one that is going to be in the anthology
