And the poor old dog was drowned

What inspires you? I think everyone who writes gets asked this at one time or another and I never know what to say. I’m betting that most people don’t.

I also get asked if I would rather be deaf or blind often enough and one day a few weeks ago I got asked both question on the same day. And it lead me to an answer.
Sound inspires me.

I was going to say music, but that isn’t entirely true. I do love music and it does inspire me, but other sounds work just as well. Anything from the cat pacing around the room reminding me I haven’t fed her or the traffic out side or the background noise of the TV turned down low and tuned to a reality show.

For the past year I have been writing pieces that have ice hockey players as heroes, so the sound of skates on ice and the roar of the crowd have inspired me.

And right now it’s the combination of the two. The title of this post is from a the song ‘the Irish rover’ the song that was on my MP3 player before the hockey game I watched this afternoon. I hope it brings me inspiration.

So what about you? What gives you inspiration?

Lately, I've been getting inspired by things I hear or watch on the local news station, and by bringing up old Word documents and reading some of the stuff I've written in the past year or two. There's also a few German films that have inspired me lately, mostly Lola rennt and Das Experiment.

I haven't seen Lola Rennt.

All these hockey stories did come from re reading something I wrote a few years ago.

Beats me. Nothing I can control like sounds, anyway.
Occasionally, photos or paintings?

Re: Uh...
I do keep some photos with me when I am writing - sometimes they are of people who I think look a bit like my chericters - or a place that I think works with the plot.

Re: Uh...
Occasionally, I find a picture that reminds me of a character in Seabird or Earthbow. For my character, Harone, see the avatar.

Once, somebody posted a photo of a little girl as a writing prompt. I came up with a wildly different story than the one who posted it had probably expected.

Scenes in movies or TV crime dramas can serve to remind me of how implacably ruthless some people can be--a reminder that comes in handy when writing fantasy adventure or sword & sorcery.

BTW, I cannot write while listening to music. I know--that makes me strange.
