"If you came to writing later in life than most, glory in it.  You have a perspective and appreciation of life unavailable to you earlier"  Paul Raymond Martin

I started writing in April of 2001 when I didn't have money for a gift for a friend.  I was 30 and would turn 31 in July.  Once I started putting ideas on paper I couldn't stop.

Now in 2009 I mostly write to make myself happy, but at the same time I do want to write things for him.  Or I should say that I write things that I think he would like to read.  He will always be 'first reader'

I write because I have to - I don't have to show it to anyone, but the act of putting a story on paper has become a life line for me.  It takes me away from pain and frustration.  Most of my writing friends have been writing since high school (or even earlier) and sometimes I feel like I missed a lot by starting so late, but at the same time I think that maybe I didn't.

So: When did you start writing?  Why do you write?  Let me know.

It depends>>>
When did I start writing? I made up stories n my head from late elementary school on. I put down one age of one of those stories using my first typewriter when I was in junior high. It was the very beginning of a time travel story.
However I didn't start writing in earnest until 1978 when I was 31-32, so I began a year later in my life than you did in yours. I did 100's of thousands of words over the next deacde. Since, I most am involved in revising -those- words plus writing new stuff only at a much slower speed than when I began.

Just to put things in perspective: In 1978-79, I was writing the first draft of Seabird which was published just a couple of years ago. In 1981, I think I was finishing up its sequel, title Earthbow, which is the book that I am currently revising for publication.

for more details, see

Please forgive the poor contrast betw font and background--Google pages recently did me in and I don't know how to fix it.

for some reason I always thought you started earlyer. I don't know why.

I don't know if I would ever have the stamina to work on smomething for 30 years but that also gives me hope for the things that I start and stop with.

I've alwasy told stories - or had them in my head. But the act of writing them out seemed alien to me.

Sometimes I still write like I'm telling a story outloud.

I write now for mostly the same reasons. I have something in my head that I just want to get out and down onto paper, whether it be something creative or just something that's on my mind

that reminds me of a quote I just read "write what keeps you up at night"

i started writing when i was 12. alot of it started out as fanfic, but i didn't know that's what it was.

when i write, it's usually because the characters are telling me yelling at me to write their story. i don't care who reads it, i just need to get the characters to shut up. they're mercifully quiet at the moment too.

see 12 seems young to me - but at the same time I used to tell stories at that age...

I have Alex babbling in my ear (the guy from the x-mas story - in fact I have 2 more x-mas stories with them in it. Now he wants a longer peice.

I never had the desire to write them down (since my teachers were evil about my writing) I just kept them in my head or told them to other people - I've alwasy told myself stories to put myself to sleep.

I have two of them posted at the com storietelleersong

I'd always enjoyed writing songs and I used to make up stories for my son, so I guess it was a natural progression. I started writing in 2003, about a year before we moved to the USA.

I write because it's fun, but also because I'd like to make a career out of it, if that's at all possible ;)

yeah I used to tell stories as well.

It is fun. And I wish you luck at the career thing - I think it is a hard career to have. At this point I'm hopeing to make it a paid hobby.
