comentary about fandom

The Twilight Examiner, Amanda Bell, has written a piece about how the media bashing of Twilight has gotten ridiculous. Obviously Twilight does not appeal to everyone, but do we see the same type of critique applied to mostly male driven items? Are conventioners in Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or other events constantly questioned as to how they choose to spend their money?

Umm - haveing been in those commuinties as well my ansere is a resounding "YES!"  all my life I've been riticuled about how I Spend my time/money.  Like it's anyones f-ing busness but my own.  Twi fans need to relize that is part of being in a fandom.  Harsh but true.

Oh men, only a person whose never been either a Trek fan or a Star Wars fan could say that.
. . actually know, given the media tendency to poke fun at both, especially about conventions, camping our for events, dressing up, being socially idiotci toward teh actors, and being socialkly odd in general, I'm unsure how she can say that.\

I'm curious though, did she have any point at all and this was jsut a bad example?

I'm wracking my brains, but every negative I come up with for a female based fandom I can think of for a male one (I mean our weight is picked on, but a guy fans sex life is picked on, both male and female get hygine knocks *thinks* etc)

I red the artical and I still didn't get it.

Being a second gen fan I never expected anything but being riticuled. I said below - I think a lot of Twi fans are used to being popular and this is a shock for them.

go ahead and mock - I actuly enjoyed them. but in talking to other fans I had a *compleatly* diffenrent emotional reaction to them. I think it started with the 'hero' saying 'they crossed a line leaving the Reservation' about two Native charicters.

but what kept pulling me in was something so small and stupid - the girls dad reminded me of my dad's family.

As to what the girl ment - well i have no idea and I even read the whole artical. But the gist of it seemed to be that Star Trec fans were mean to her...

I think that Twilight fans aren't from the world of geek (I think maybe a lot of them are from mars) so they don't 'get it' (and should be riticuled by fans)

I hate edward - he's a racset bastard (sorry still rankeling from the 'they crossed the line' thing) Bella is like the anti-feminist hero. And the Native guys are actuly described as "all looking alike" (but on the up side the books have brought a lot of money into LaPush) and if we were gonna get into who I'd be jumping around saying he was hot - it was Paul - bad tempered werewolf guy (who seems to have no parents)

She's not much of a writer - but it's one of those stories that pulls you in anyway...

oh and back to that 'they all look alike' thing I doubt your brothers look anything like my dad.

I don't think Twilight stuff should be at comicon (and I would have been embarised if I had gone to the panel) it dosn't realy fit there.

guy geeks have tired to bully me in the past - but they don't get far. part of me is totaly amused by the whole thing all these normal girls dealing with things that happen to geeks all the time. LOL

oh and the Native girls? All described as plain - the only one with personality was made 'infertile' and irrational. Look I may not be the most beautifle girl in the world - I look a lot like - well dad says I look a lot like his grandmother - extept for the skin color (I have a big nose and mouth and an er - 'srtong' jaw) but I'm not 'plain'.

I have to see if I can find a vid I saw of Comicon where the reporter was going down the line of TwiHards asking them what they like about Edward. They stopped at two Native Girls and they looked at the reporter and said "not much. We are team Jacob".

OK enough of that. I have to admit I did write "they looked white and privlaged' in a story.

They shouldn't have been there. If I couldn't have seen - oh lets say Harlin Elison becasue of some TwiHard I would have flipped my lid.

I kept wondering if she had ever met a native woman *shrug*

(remind me someday to tell you about having my nose 'feminised' when i had my sinus surgery - I didn't ask for rhinoplasty - he just thought I'd like to have a smaller nose)

I'm bad with blonds - all blonds look the same to me.

When I go to comicon SD (and I will one of these days - it's like Geek meca) I hope there is no big thing (like Twi or even Harry Potter) going on and I can just enjoy myself.

oh very cool! i think it's on my bookshelf - i hope my daughter (she's going in to 7th grade) reads it and likes it as well.

i ought to watch the movie just to say i saw it. it'll be like a blast from my past with all the actors in it. *guh*

when i was in middle school, in one of the programs i was in, we had these little magazines, "Read magazine," and one of the sections was a play/script you could assign parts to and "act out" (or just read through) and one of them was the Outsiders with pics from the movie and stuff. then, i had NO idea who these guys were, but YUM, that's for sure. :)

guess i haven't been in a fandom long enough to give you an answer, but i like what the two above me - and you - said. i've only been to an entirety of 3 Cons - and two of them were BaltiCon in the mid-90s - so i can't really say. but knowing i'm in fandom/geekdom, i expect people who don't understand to look at me like i'm weird. ;)

I think that maybe a lot of Twifans come from being -- well popular. They aren't geeks and this is their first experince with being knocked for something they like.
Aug. 21st, 2009 02:05 am (UTC)
yeah.... i could see that....
Aug. 21st, 2009 10:40 am (UTC)

Aug. 21st, 2009 01:06 pm (UTC)

"and the lion laid down with the lamb...."
Aug. 22nd, 2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
and the wolf shall lay down with the lamb

i was making an attempt to quote Twilight.....
Aug. 23rd, 2009 04:24 pm (UTC)
yeah I know. I just think it's funny that she mis quoted the bible (not that everyone dosn't mis quote that)
Aug. 23rd, 2009 09:35 pm (UTC)
heheheh right....

I think it is stupid that they mock any fandom, geez people have the right to like what they like...leave them alone!
Aug. 23rd, 2009 04:23 pm (UTC)
of course people are free to like whatever, but at the same time fandoms are alwasy mocked. Alwasy have been always will. And fandoms mock eachother. I mean look at the issues between Star Trek fans and Star Wars fans.

It seems like the Twi fandom takes itsself way to seriously not to mention that, from what I heard from comicon reports, the twi fans were pritty darn rude. I mean comicon is about all fandoms and everyone has to make space for everyone else. It kinda goes both ways - if you don't respect others fandoms they won't respect yours.
